This morning Tamari taught us how to make babakau, a Fijian food that is typicaly eaten in the morning. It involves very simple ingredients, and we had a great time kneading and cutting the dough. It was a delicious meal, and we made the babakau into donuts with icing.
We then walked through the jungle again and enjoyed the lush forest and bamboo. We also climbed a strangler fig tree and swung on jungle vines. Tuks created a handle for us on the vine using a stick, which worked effectively until Liz boke it :P. However, it was all in good fun and had us all laughing. Fortunatley, nobody was hurt.
After the jungle walk we departed Wanikai in the canoes and dropped off medical supplies to Namuamua Medical Centre where they were in need of supplies. This medical centre now has a solar direct drive vaccination fridge donated by UNICEF. These fridges are much more practical than when they were run off gas bottles, as these new fridges are more reliable because they produce ice which can keep the vaccines cool for days.
After this we travelled further down the river and swam in the pools of waterfalls. We also jumped off the side of rocks into the pools which made for a fun experience.
Once we arrived back in Navua we ate lunch and rode back to Pacific Harbour in the back of a truck. It was very bumpy and we slid all around the back when we turned the corners. However, we didn’t make it all the way back to Ben and Mere’s house in the truck as the road was flooded. The truck refused to go through, so we had to walk through knee deep water with all of our luggage. The floor was sharp with rocks which made the 80 metre walk quite painful with no shoes, where some of us fell over into the water! (Gabby)
After a quick hello to Mere we spent a relaxing afternoon at a local resort swimming at the beach and in the pool. When we returned to Ben and Mere’s house the road was still flooded. We arrived in the pitch black with only the the little light of flashlights to guide us through. Luckily, we all had a good time and made it home safely. We spent the rest of the night sifitng through photos and typing up our blogs from the previous nights. Until we were finally able to go to bed after a big day.
