Gotcha! The first photo I've managed to snap of a shy albatross is officially in the album. It might be the worst ever photo of a shy but I took it from shore looking out to sea on max zoom in the wind.

Gotcha!
This morning I looked out the tent and wondered if I should just stay in bed. The easterly was raging and the white caps looked messy. Hmm, might not get any better... I edged into the fray with the bow crashing into the waves. Just past Dead Man's Cove the current moved in to the coast making it even more jumbled and peaky. Paddling past the first headland I could steer a more northwest course and pop the sail up. It had mixed results. I shot across the water at a blistering pace but lurched uneasily in the gusty conditions. It was a wild ride as I rounded Cape Rochon and into relative calm. The wind, still strong, now came from directly behind and the waves weren't rebounding back towards me. I used the paddle to keep balance but just let the wind carry me forward. A red cray fishing boat was laying pots as I rounded North West Cape and the wild ride was over. I paddled into the nearest sandy bay on Ranger Point and set up camp right on the beach. Looking out the tent door I can see straight across to the northern tip of Hunter Island and beyond that to Albatross Island. Even from here, 5-6 kms away, I can see whitewater bouncing off the end of Hunter Island so it must be woeful on Cape Keraudren. It'll need to be much calmer weather to venture further west to the island at the center of this whole expedition. Tomorrow I'll sneak down to meet Bev and John who live here on Three Hummock Island.
