Whoa, hang on a second, I thought as I pulled into the beach at Spiers Bay, is that pumice? Earlier in the year Expedition Class followed the MESH scientific journey to explore a huge underwater volcano. Dr Rebecca Carey was the team leader and we learnt how pumice that formed during the eruption of Havre volcano in 2012 actually washed up in beaches up the east coast of Australia. Could this pumice be from Havre? I have emailed Dr Rebecca to get her opinion and will let you know what I find out.

Pumice... Where from?
I only paddled a short distance today to move to a spot where I could get fresh water. John and Beverley O'Brien are managers on the island who look after guests who stay in the homestead and cottage from the historic farming operations here. It's also where our Year 10 students will be coming to meet me in week 4. Pretty amazing! John and Bev were in their house when I walked over the hill. We had a cuppa and compared how long it's been since we'd seen other people. 11 days for me and 21 days for Bev and John! We'll find out more about their island life when the students join this expedition but for now I filled up the water bladders, recharged my main battery and made a date for lunch tomorrow. A forecast strong southerly will keep me landed.
