Report by Layah and Olivia
Hi! We are the Search For The Shy Albatross expedition students. Kate, Cate, Ruby, Callan, Sebie, Olivia and Layah are accompanied by our camera men, Sam and Paul as well as the wonderful scientific and guiding experts Emma and Alastair. We are from lots of different schools: Ogilvie, Taroona, Smithton and Calvin. Our journey started off on a boat with a rat. Oh wait, his name was Rat. It was a very fast and rough trip and while most of us had a great time, some of us felt a bit sick (Cate)! When we got to the island we were greeted by the island caretakers, John and Bev, who were very friendly and even baked us a cake! We were given an overview of our activities for the week. Then we had lunch and soon set off on our walk to Granite Hill.
Here we are pictured on top of a rock. On our walk we came across a few young Forester Kangaroo carcasses. Why do you think some of the Kangaroos on Three Hummock Island are dying? We had to find a penny in a rock that was used as a survey marker in the 1950's. The penny pictured has gone green because of copper rust. At the beginning of our walk we were given a list of 100 birds on the island. During our journey we were on the lookout for these birds. Partway through we trekked onto the beach where we spotted the Hooded Plover. Walking towards them they led us away out of their territory, keeping us at a distance because they weren't used to the people. On our way back to the hut Kate and Ruby picked up some rubbish they found on the beach. Stay posted for our scientific adventure on Three Hummock this week... If we survive the storm coming tomorrow!
