At first light I thought it might be another day in the shack but as the morning wore on, the wind and showers eased. By the time I'd packed and carried everything down to the channel the tide was getting low. I put the sail up and glided east without paddling. At the mouth of the channel dark fishy shapes darted beneath the kayak in the clear shallows. Over the sandbar and I adjusted the sail to catch a smidge of the westerly and began paddling. The sail is a square rigger but it can catch a tail wind, cross wind and even a breeze coming from just forward of your paddling arm. Its great fun and saves a bit of energy.

Love Bay
Pulling in at the northern tip of Walker Island I've set up just above the high tide mark, at least I hope it is. Might be a quick dash this evening otherwise. John Hammond told me Love Bay is named after Eddy Love who was shipwrecked here in the 1800's and ended up walking off the islands at low tide! The tides around here create some fast flowing water so I'm not surprised to hear a few sailors have come to grief in times past.
