Welcome to the beginning of our eagle adventure this year.
I'm Dr Clare Hawkins and, through the videos on these pages, I'll be taking you on a scientific journey to learn about birds in Tasmania with my friend Dr James Pay.
In the resources for teachers, you'll also find some fascinating opportunities here to think about these birds artistically and culturally - especially the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle - as well as some great science options particularly on Days 8 & 9.
NINE LESSONS
Recommended to run from Monday 12 May to Thursday 22 May (except Saturday and Sunday):
...discover each new day of our online virtual expedition here on the Expedition Class website... (start earlier or later if need be).
You'll find a series of brand-new, cross-curricular, FREE online education resources, developed by Art Education Australia in collaboration with the Bookend Trust. The link to the introductory information is below. Each lesson builds on the information that James and I present in the day's short video. All the Australian (and Victorian) Curriculum links are included.
MEET THE SCIENTISTS
Would your students like to meet us, to learn more about the science and what it's like to do this research?
We can run a small number of 45 minute virtual school visits within 12-22 May. If you'd like to be included in our online webinar schedule, let us know asap (by 6 May latest). Tell us of any specific interests, and if you might also be interested in a 30 minute chat to prepare teachers.
We can talk about eagle biology, the context and science behind Where? Where? Wedgie! and progress so far. People of all ages will be carrying out the surveys all across Tasmania, starting on 9 May - what have they seen? What does it mean? You can also send us your questions and do our fun activities.
DAY 0 RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS:
Discover the other days via the numbers below 'Expedition Class' at the top left of this page.
On some days, you'll find extra info via the arrow at the top right hand corner of the page, beside 'DISCUSS'.
(Hunting for previous years' resources? Unfortunately the platform that supported them has closed down, but you can still access the guides & student packs).
