Fiji Power 2017 Day 9 : 09-10-2017

Today was Fiji Day and we ventured out into the bustling hub of Nadi. Getting there was an experience in and of itself. We struggled to find a maxi taxi for all of us so we caught a local bus which was filled to the brim with cheerful locals dressed in their Fijian best going in to Nadi town for the celebrations.

Fiji Day is October 10 and that is a double anniversary for the nation. On that date in 1874, King Seru Epenisa Cakobau ceded Fiji to the United Kingdom. On the same date in 1970, Fiji regained its independence. The Fiji Day celebrations included a military parade, bands and lots of fair rides. The Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama and the President George Konrote who is Commander-in-Chief of the Military Forces were a focal point of the military parade.

After the main celebrations we headed back into the Nadi shopping strip to spend our remaining Fijian cash. Our first stop was at the fruit market where a pineapple and coconut came into our possession. Upon eating these at dinner time, we can say the fruit here is marvelous!

Our souvenir shopping went down a treat, and parents can expect some lovely goodies when we get back home tomorrow.

Back at the Nadi Bay Resort we retired to the swimming pool for some relaxation. Feeling refreshed we headed to dinner and had a jolly time. To finish off our day we all got stuck into our books which we have been taking out at every possible opportunity, interrupted briefly by sporadic bursts of fireworks. BOOM!
