Tree House Challenge Day 10 : 16-08-2017

After a night of high in the myrtle tree I descended to have one last explore with Yoav. He returned home today. We left our campsite and went to the Dempster Plains. They are buttongrass plains that were burnt along with huge areas of forest in recent fires. 

The buttongrass plains were burnt in a recent bushfire. The fringing forest was also burnt so we went to check out how the different forest types recovered from fire. The eucalyptus trees showed new green shoots but further into the gully we explored the myrtle and leatherwood trees showed no signs of new life. Some forest types clearly liked being burnt more than others.

After saying goodbye to Yoav I went wandering through the rainforest near the treehouse. Not long after I set out there were two huge claps of thunder and then a hail storm rained down. Sheesh! The weather has been mixed to put it mildly. With a waterproof raincoat and overpants it was still fun being in the bush and I wandered around poking logs and photographing fungi for hours. 

With the daylight dimming I'll have a bite to eat and head back up the tree to sleep. It's getting soggy in there but with two sleeping bags it's still warm and cosy. I'm surprised that there's not more insect life in there with me because it's not a fully sealed tree house. When I have my headlight on to read my book I'm only visited by a few moths and small unidentified flies. Alone in the rainforest tonight... what will I hear?
