Change of plans on day one! The team met at Taroona High School to check equipment first thing this morning. Raincoat, over pants, tent, stove, thermals, headlight, boots, first aid kit, food, drink bottle, sleeping bag, sleep mat... what have we missed?

After shoving it all in the trailer we zoomed up the Lyell Highway towards Lake St Clair. The weather changed from calm and sunny to calm and raining heavily by the time we arrived. Instead of heading to our bush camp at Traveller's Rest Lagoon we opted for the hostel. One of the biggest dangers in this environment is exposure to the cold. A first night pitched camp in these conditions was a risk we decided to avoid.
As a bonus it gave us time to explore the nearby button grass plains near Mt King William saddle. Dr Alastair was searching for a burrowing crayfish sometimes called the rain crayfish, though it's scientific name is Ombrastacoides leptomerus. Try saying that with a mouth full of chips! Burrowing crayfish are our Week 1 Feature Creature and we'll be looking for more over the next few days in the upper catchment of the River Derwent. Snow is expected tonight but hopefully we will reach our bush camp tomorrow. Our adventure has begun and how wonderful to see the questions and comments on the boards so far.
