Today was very relaxing after our first major walk yesterday, where we ascended 600 meters. In the morning most of us took a 10 minute stroll to the top of Namche to see the sunrise over Mt Everest and its surrounding peaks. It was incredible to see. Despite the early rise, everybody was able to push through the gnawing urge to sleep and appreciate the view.
We were left to our own devices for the day. Some went on a 3 hour walk to the Namche airstrip, one of the highest airstrips in the world. Some went into town to stock up on candy and junk food for the massive trek ahead. Thankfully not as many poor purchases were made today. The high spirits around the campsite may be due to the laziness one can indulge in after resting for 2 days, the guilty pleasure of shopping and the holy gift of Wi-Fi. This general happiness has made us gel together a bit more. This will probably be helpful in the coming days when people start to feel down and sick, having a shoulder to lean on. Some of us, including myself, feel reluctant to leave Namche, as we are unsure when the next time it is that wifi, showers, good health and a well-needed rest are at our disposal. But of course every day will be brilliant. The views of the valley and mountains can only get better. The views from Monjo and Namche trumped any of the negative aspects that come with travelling. Hopefully this is true for the rest of the trek.
